Quadrupolar axialization

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009722

A technique in Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry that moves trapped ions toward the center of the cell. A quadrupolar excitation field at about the cyclotron frequency converts the large-radius magnetron motion of the ions into cyclotron motion while the ions collide with a buffer gas, and collisional damping then shrinks the cyclotron radius. The result is a compact ion cloud on the trap axis before excitation and detection.
