Quadrupolar nuclide
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009723
An atomic nucleus that possesses a nuclear electric quadrupole moment, meaning its charge distribution is not perfectly spherical. This occurs for nuclei with a spin quantum number (I) greater than 1/2. Such nuclides interact with electric field gradients in their molecular environment, leading to quadrupolar coupling, which affects their nuclear magnetic resonance spectra.
