Nuclear electric quadrupole moment

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008097

A measure of the deviation of a nucleus from spherical symmetry, arising from the non-uniform distribution of electric charge within the nucleus. This moment interacts with an external electric field gradient, leading to energy level splittings observable in nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. It is a tensor quantity, with its magnitude often expressed in units of barn (1 barn = 10^-28 m^2).
