Nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013347
A family of dimeric transcription factors that switch on genes for cytokines, inflammatory mediators and cell-survival proteins. The complex sits in the cytoplasm of nearly every animal cell type, held inactive by an inhibitor protein (IκB); stimuli such as cytokines, stress, free radicals, heavy metals and bacterial or viral products trigger degradation of the inhibitor and release the factor into the nucleus. It was first identified in B cells as a protein binding the enhancer of the immunoglobulin kappa light chain gene.
