Electric dipole moment
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003630
A measure of the charge separation within a system, such as a molecule, arising from an unequal distribution of positive and negative charges. It is a vector quantity, with its direction pointing from the center of negative charge to the center of positive charge. The magnitude is the product of the charge magnitude and the distance between the charges, with the SI unit being the coulomb-meter (C·m), although the debye (D) is also used in chemistry.
