Electric discharge

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003631

The passage of an electric current through a normally non-conducting gas by means of a plasma formed in an applied electric field, with electrons and ions acting as charge carriers. The plasma contains excited atoms, ions and molecules that serve as sources in atomic and molecular emission spectrometry. It may be driven between electrodes, as in a direct-current arc or glow discharge, or without electrodes, as in an inductively coupled plasma.
