Electric discharge
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005303
The sudden flow of electric current through a medium that is normally an insulator, occurring when the electric field strength exceeds the dielectric breakdown strength of the medium. In the atmosphere, this phenomenon is most commonly observed as lightning, where charge accumulated in clouds is released through the air to the ground or within the cloud itself. It involves the rapid neutralization of separated electric charges.
