Breakdown field
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004018
The minimum electric field strength required to cause electrical discharge or breakdown in a gas, such as air. When the electric field exceeds this threshold, the gas becomes ionized and conductive, leading to phenomena like lightning. This value depends on factors such as pressure, temperature, and humidity of the air.
