Glow electric discharge

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004922

A type of plasma sustained by passing a direct current through a gas at low pressure, typically between 0.1 and 10 Torr. It is characterized by a low current density and a relatively high voltage drop between the electrodes, which creates a luminous glow from the de-excitation of atoms and molecules. This discharge serves as an atomization and excitation source in analytical techniques such as glow discharge atomic emission spectroscopy (GD-AES) and glow discharge mass spectrometry (GD-MS).
