Corona discharge

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002588

A localized electrical discharge that occurs in a fluid, such as air, around a conductor when the electric field strength exceeds a certain threshold but is insufficient to cause a complete breakdown or spark. It is characterized by a faint glow and the production of ions and ozone. In analytical chemistry, it is used in some ionization sources for mass spectrometry.
