Corona discharge ionization

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002589

A soft ionization technique that uses a gas discharge at atmospheric pressure to create reactant ions from a solvent or reagent gas, which then ionize analyte molecules. A high electric potential is applied to a sharp electrode, creating a localized plasma, or corona, that generates ions through a series of gas-phase reactions. This method is a form of atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) and is commonly used as an ion source for liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry.
