Transition moment
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012234
A vector quantity that describes the probability and polarization of an electronic transition between two quantum states in a molecule. It is calculated from the integral of the initial and final state wavefunctions and the electric dipole moment operator. The magnitude of the transition moment determines the intensity of an absorption or emission band, while its direction indicates the polarization of the light absorbed or emitted.
