Dielectric polarization

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003154

The electric dipole moment per unit volume induced in a dielectric by an applied electric field, arising from the slight displacement of bound positive and negative charges and the alignment of permanent dipoles. It equals the electric displacement minus the vacuum permittivity times the field, and it is measured in coulombs per square meter. In a linear dielectric it is proportional to the field, and the constant of proportionality is the electric susceptibility.
