Vibronic transition
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012571
A transition that involves a simultaneous change in both the electronic and vibrational energy states of a molecule. These transitions give rise to the fine structure observed within the electronic absorption and emission bands of molecular spectra. The intensity of each vibronic line is governed by the Franck-Condon principle, which relates the probability of a transition to the overlap between the vibrational wavefunctions of the initial and final electronic states.
