Vibronic coupling
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012570
The interaction between the electronic motion and the nuclear vibrational motion within a molecule. This coupling represents the breakdown of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, which assumes that electronic and nuclear motions can be treated independently. Vibronic coupling is responsible for the appearance of forbidden electronic transitions in absorption and emission spectra and for phenomena such as the Jahn-Teller effect in non-linear molecules.
