Kinetic coupling
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006349
The interaction between different vibrational modes in a molecule that arises from the kinetic energy terms in the Hamiltonian, rather than from potential energy terms. This coupling occurs when the motion of one atom affects the kinetic energy of another, leading to mixed vibrational states. It is particularly relevant in molecules with light atoms or large amplitude motions.
