Renner-Teller effect
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010182
A vibronic coupling phenomenon occurring in linear polyatomic molecules when an electronic state is degenerate and the molecule is bent. This interaction splits the degenerate electronic state into two components, leading to complex vibrational spectra. It is analogous to the Jahn-Teller effect, which applies to non-linear molecules.
