Tropones
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013671
A class of non-benzenoid aromatic compounds featuring a seven-membered hydrocarbon ring containing a ketone functional group. The parent compound is tropone, or cyclohepta-2,4,6-trien-1-one, which exhibits aromatic character due to the contribution of a dipolar resonance structure with a positive charge on the ring and a negative charge on the oxygen. This charge separation gives it a large dipole moment and chemical properties distinct from those of typical aliphatic or aromatic ketones.
