Quadrupole splitting
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009726
The splitting of nuclear energy levels due to the interaction between a nucleus's electric quadrupole moment and the electric field gradient at the nucleus. This phenomenon is observed in Mössbauer spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance. It provides information about the local electronic environment and symmetry around the nucleus.
