Axialization

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012911

The process of confining ions to the central axis of a mass spectrometer's ion trap, particularly in Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometry. This is achieved by applying a weak quadrupolar electric field that compresses the ion cloud. Axialization reduces the radial spread of ions, leading to a more coherent ion packet for detection.
