Ion trap mass spectrometer

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006098

A mass spectrometer in which ions are confined in a three-dimensional quadrupole radiofrequency electric field, which holds those within a chosen m/z range on stable paths. The field is then changed so that ions of successive m/z become unstable and leave the trap toward a detector, and isolation and fragmentation steps can be done in the same trap for tandem mass spectrometry. It uses no magnetic field, unlike the ion cyclotron resonance trap.
