Paul ion trap

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008554

An ion trap that holds charged particles in a three-dimensional quadrupole field generated by a radiofrequency voltage on a central ring electrode between two end-cap electrodes. Ions of a chosen mass-to-charge ratio stay in stable orbits inside the trap while others are lost, and changing the applied voltages stores, ejects or sends ions onward to a detector according to their mass-to-charge ratio. Wolfgang Paul shared the 1989 Nobel Prize in Physics for developing the device.
