Pauli exclusion principle

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008555

A quantum mechanical principle asserting that no two identical fermions, such as electrons, can occupy the same quantum state simultaneously within a single quantum system. For electrons in an atom, this implies that no two electrons can have the same set of four quantum numbers: the principal quantum number (n), the azimuthal quantum number (l), the magnetic quantum number (ml), and the spin quantum number (ms). Consequently, any single atomic orbital can accommodate a maximum of two electrons, which must have opposite spins.
