Exchange repulsion
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004170
A quantum mechanical effect arising from the Pauli exclusion principle, which prevents electrons with the same spin from occupying the same spatial region. This repulsion contributes to the overall repulsive forces between atoms or molecules when their electron clouds overlap. It is a short-range interaction that becomes dominant at very close distances between interacting species.
