Diamagnetic
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003126
The property of a substance with negative magnetic susceptibility, which is therefore weakly repelled by a magnetic field. It arises from currents that an applied field induces in the electron orbitals, which oppose the field, and it is present in all matter. Substances with all electrons paired show only diamagnetism, whereas unpaired electrons give paramagnetism that overrides it.
