Shielding constant

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010820

A dimensionless quantity that describes the reduction in the effective magnetic field experienced by an atomic nucleus due to the surrounding electron cloud. This effect arises from the induced magnetic fields generated by the electrons, which oppose the external applied magnetic field. The shielding constant is a key parameter in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, influencing chemical shifts.
