Chemical shift anisotropy
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001964
The orientation-dependent variation of the chemical shift of a nucleus in nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. This effect arises because the magnetic shielding experienced by a nucleus is not uniform in all directions, causing the resonance frequency to depend on the molecule's orientation relative to the external magnetic field. In solid-state NMR of a powder sample, this results in a broad, asymmetric peak shape rather than a sharp line.
