Shielding

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010819

The phenomenon in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy where the electron cloud surrounding a nucleus reduces the effective magnetic field experienced by that nucleus. This effect causes the nucleus to resonate at a higher applied magnetic field, resulting in an upfield shift in the NMR spectrum. The degree of shielding is influenced by the electron density and the presence of neighboring electronegative atoms or magnetic fields from circulating electrons.
