Resonance
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010242
A concept in valence bond theory describing the delocalization of electrons within molecules or polyatomic ions where the bonding cannot be adequately represented by a single Lewis structure. Instead, the actual electronic structure is considered an intermediate or hybrid of several contributing structures, called resonance forms. This phenomenon leads to increased stability, known as resonance energy, compared to any single contributing structure.
