Valence bond theory
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012499
A quantum mechanical model that describes chemical bonding as the overlap of atomic orbitals, forming localized bonds between atoms. It explains the formation of covalent bonds by the sharing of electron pairs, with each bond having specific directionality and strength. This theory is often contrasted with molecular orbital theory, which describes electrons as delocalized over the entire molecule.
