Valence band
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012498
The band of allowed electron energies in a solid that lies highest among those completely filled with electrons at absolute zero. Its electrons are the ones that take part in bonding between the atoms. In semiconductors and insulators a band gap, a range of forbidden energies, separates it from the empty conduction band above it, a gap of about 1.1 eV in silicon.
