Fermi level
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004378
The energy at which the Fermi-Dirac occupation probability of an electron state is one half at any temperature above absolute zero, equal to the electron chemical potential of a solid or of an electrolyte solution. In a metal it lies inside a partly filled band, while in an intrinsic semiconductor it sits near the middle of the band gap, and its position relative to the band edges sets the electrical behavior. It is measured in electronvolts.
