Mesomerism
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007217
The phenomenon where the electronic structure of a molecule cannot be adequately represented by a single Lewis formula but requires a combination of two or more contributing structures. These contributing structures, known as resonance forms, differ only in the placement of electrons, not atoms. The actual molecule is a resonance hybrid, possessing properties intermediate to the contributing structures.
