Kekulé structure

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006311

A structural formula for an aromatic molecule such as benzene in which each double bond is drawn at a fixed position, alternating with single bonds, and any delocalization between them is not shown. Benzene has two Kekulé structures that differ only in where the double bonds sit, and neither alone depicts the real molecule, a resonance hybrid with six equal carbon-carbon bonds of about 139 pm.
