non-Kekulé structure

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008032

A species whose unpaired electrons make it impossible to draw any Lewis structure in which every bonding electron is paired up in a single or double bond. Trimethylenemethane and m-xylylene are examples, and in each, any Kekulé drawing leaves at least two conjugated atoms without a pi-bond partner.
