Aromatic
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000784
Describing a ring-shaped, fully conjugated molecule whose measured stability exceeds what would be expected for a single hypothetical structure with localized double bonds, such as one Kekulé formula. The extra stabilization comes from delocalization of pi electrons around the ring. A planar monocyclic system is aromatic when it holds 4n + 2 pi electrons, with n a non-negative integer, as in benzene with six.
