Resonance hybrid
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010250
The actual electronic structure of a molecule or ion that cannot be adequately represented by a single Lewis structure, but rather by a combination of two or more contributing resonance forms. This hybrid structure possesses properties intermediate to those of the individual contributing forms and is more stable than any single form. The concept explains the delocalization of electrons and the equalization of bond lengths in conjugated systems.
