Hybrid orbital
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005440
A conceptual orbital formed by the mathematical combination of atomic orbitals on the same atom. This mixing results in new orbitals with different shapes and energies, which are more suitable for describing the observed molecular geometries and bonding. For example, sp3 hybrid orbitals are formed from one s and three p atomic orbitals.
