Hybridization
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005442
The process of mixing atomic orbitals on a central atom to form new hybrid orbitals that are degenerate and have different shapes and orientations than the original atomic orbitals. This concept explains the geometry of molecules and the nature of chemical bonds. For instance, carbon in methane undergoes sp3 hybridization to form four equivalent bonds.
