Protoplast
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013451
A plant, bacterial, or fungal cell that has had its cell wall completely removed, leaving only the plasma membrane and its internal contents. This removal is achieved through enzymatic digestion, making the cell osmotically sensitive and spherical. Protoplasts are widely used in genetic engineering and cell fusion experiments due to their exposed plasma membrane.
