Prototrophs
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009617
Microorganisms, such as bacteria or yeast, capable of synthesizing all the complex organic molecules required for their growth from simple inorganic substances and a single source of carbon and energy. They do not require any specific organic growth factors to be supplied in their culture medium. A prototroph is contrasted with an auxotroph, which is a mutant strain that has lost the ability to synthesize a particular required organic compound and must obtain it from the environment.
