Anaerobe
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012867
A microorganism that does not require oxygen for growth and can even be harmed by its presence. These organisms obtain energy through metabolic pathways that do not involve oxygen, such as fermentation or anaerobic respiration. Many bacteria found in oxygen-depleted environments, like deep soils or the gut, are anaerobes.
