Methanogens
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007273
Microorganisms, primarily archaea, that produce methane as a metabolic byproduct in anoxic conditions. They obtain energy by converting carbon dioxide and other simple carbon compounds into methane. These organisms are obligate anaerobes and are found in environments such as wetlands, digestive tracts of animals, and deep-sea hydrothermal vents.
