Aerobe
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012847
An organism that requires the presence of molecular oxygen for growth and energy production through cellular respiration. Obligate aerobes are entirely dependent on oxygen for survival, whereas facultative anaerobes can switch to anaerobic metabolism when oxygen is absent. In biotechnology, aerobes are cultivated in bioreactors supplied with air or oxygen for processes like antibiotic production and wastewater treatment.
