Asphyxiant

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012896

A substance that causes suffocation by displacing oxygen from the air or by interfering with the body's ability to absorb or transport oxygen. Simple asphyxiants, such as nitrogen or helium, reduce the concentration of oxygen in the breathing atmosphere. Chemical asphyxiants, like carbon monoxide, interfere with cellular respiration.
