Carbonylhemoglobin
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001656
A stable complex formed when carbon monoxide (CO) binds to the heme iron in hemoglobin, displacing oxygen. This binding affinity is significantly higher than that of oxygen, leading to reduced oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood and tissue hypoxia. Elevated levels of carbonylhemoglobin are indicative of carbon monoxide poisoning.
