Methemoglobinaemia
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007275
A condition characterized by the presence of an abnormally high concentration of methemoglobin in the blood. Methemoglobin is a form of hemoglobin in which the iron in the heme group is oxidized from the ferrous (Fe2+) to the ferric (Fe3+) state, rendering it incapable of binding oxygen. This leads to reduced oxygen delivery to tissues, causing cyanosis and hypoxia.
