Hemes
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005183
Porphyrin complexes containing an iron ion, which are prosthetic groups found in many proteins involved in oxygen transport, electron transfer, and catalysis. The iron atom is typically coordinated within the porphyrin ring, and its oxidation state can vary. Hemes are responsible for the red color of blood.
