Prosthetic group
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009562
A non-protein chemical component that is tightly and stably bound to a protein, often through covalent bonds, and is required for the protein's biological activity. Unlike some cofactors that bind transiently, a prosthetic group is a permanent part of the protein's structure. The heme group in hemoglobin and cytochromes is a common example of a prosthetic group.
