Haem
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013141
A prosthetic group consisting of an iron atom coordinated within a porphyrin ring, specifically protoporphyrin IX. This complex is responsible for oxygen transport and storage in many biological systems, including hemoglobin and myoglobin. The iron atom in haem can exist in different oxidation states, typically Fe(II) or Fe(III).
